Hard-working Colorado rock band Fox Street is bringing its re-envisioned Western sound to North Shore, playing a late night show in Crystal Bay Casino’s Red Room on Saturday, Aug. 29.

The band is keen to return to Crystal Bay, having played there multiple times in past years, and is particularly stoked for the late-night crowd.

“People aren’t trying to go to that show to watch you get sensitive, you know what I mean?” drummer Eric Low said. “We’re pretty good at recognizing, ‘OK, here’s a night where we need to go rock out, help people get loose and shake their ass.’”

Along with Low, Fox Street is James Dumm (lead guitar, vocals), Jonathan Huvard (lead vocals, guitar), Alex Scott (Bass) and Mirco Altenbach (sax/keys).

The group first came together in the late 2000s, out of previous jamming in childhood and college.

“We kind of met around when we were all graduating college,” Low said. “We all lived in Denver at the time so we started just kind of playing together. James and I grew up together so we’ve been playing together since sixth grade. We decided to put a band together and get some gigs.”

The new act needed a title; the musicians were sharing a house on Fox Street in Denver at the time, and chose the street name as their moniker.

The lineup has undergone substantial changes since those early days, Low noted.

“We’ve had a lot of different lineups over the years. … The cool thing is, each of our albums tends to have a vibe and a sound to it,” he said.  “Our first album was a totally different lineup than our last one.”

The band released the new album, “Authentic Western Style,” in late July, and has been touring in support of the record.

Fox Street cut out of Colorado during the spring of 2014 to write material for the new album, with the idea of working on something of a destination album. The band holed up at the ranch of a family friend outside of Corpus Christi, Texas. The setting was ideal for the album’s goal and style.

“We were trying to be, not ‘Western’ in the sense of cowboys and Indians, but re-inventing what ‘Western’ means today, reinventing the style of ‘Western,’ ” Low said. “We have a little bit of country but we have a lot of funky soul in our sound too.

“We’re definitely more of a high-energy kind of party band. Especially when we go play live, like Crystal Bay. We definitely improvise a lot, not in a free form way, but more of a bluesy type of way, everyone will take turns and take solos.”

Fox Street is working on expanding its touring appeal, taking a strategic approach to which areas it hits and how often, which brings them to Tahoe.

“We’re really trying to microscope our touring a bit and really hit the places that we want to grow in the immediate future,” Low said. “We want to do Northern California a lot; we’ve been playing this run at the Boom Boom Room in Los Angeles.

“We’ve been doing Crystal Bay for years but it’s been in with other tours and it’s been kind of sporadic. Now were trying to hit it every three months or so.”

Other areas on which the group is focused include the Atlanta area. as well as eventually the Pacific Northwest and New England.

“It’s one of those roots things, you’re planting your roots there and then you’ll grow out,” Low said.

Of course, the group wants to maintain its strong hometown roots with constant appearances in the Denver area, working to expand to larger venues and to keep their performances varied for fans.

“If you’re paying attention and following, our shows are very different from one another, we’ve been able to play lots of new stuff,” Low said. We’re trying to put together some big shows in Denver, upgrading to 1,200-person venues rather than the 600-person places that we have been playing so far.”
