Incline Village road delays, evening shutdowns

A 3-mile bike path from Incline Village to Sand Harbor will be completed soon.

A series of overnight full road closures will take place on State Route 28 south of Incline Village through mid-May as the Nevada Department of Transportation installs bridges on the State Route 28 shared used path.

Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village near Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor State Park from 8 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. nightly during the following dates:

  • Road closed nights of April 29, April 30 and May 1
  • Road closed nights of May 6 and 7
  • Road closed nights of May 14 and 15

The road closures are for installation of two pre-fabricated bridge decks on the 3-plus mile shared use path under construction between southern Incline Village and Sand Harbor State Park. The closures are scheduled for overnight hours to reduce impact on heavy daytime traffic. The closures are weather dependent and subject to change. One potential alternate route for north to south traffic is Mt. Rose Highway connecting Incline Village to southern Reno and taking Interstate 580 to U.S. 50 to Lake Tahoe.

Through late June single lane closures will also take place Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. in areas between the southern end of Incline Village and 3 miles south of Sand Harbor State Park. Periodic overnight and weekend single lane closures may also occur. Motorists should anticipate 20 to 30-minute travel delays.

Begun in 2016, the multi-year project will build a 3-plus mile shared-use path from the southern end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park. The pathway has been excavated and paved, four bridge decks installed, and 2,800 linear feet of storm drain pipes, a pathway tunnel and 5,000 linear feet of reinforcing wall installed. This year, final drainage, landscaping, paving and other finishing work, as well as installation of remaining bridge decks, will take place.

When open this summer, the new pathway by contractor Granite Construction will enhance safety and mobility for everyone on the roadway. More than 2.5 million vehicles a year travel on State Route 28, mixing with as many as 2,000 pedestrians and bicyclists who park and recreate near the roadside on peak days, creating safety and accessibility concerns on the mountain highway. Three new parking areas near the Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek Café will also provide safer parking options.
