Moe’s Original BBQ has musical recipe for an epic show: Eric Lindell and Anson Funderburgh

A reader who peruses a music calendar occasionally finds a show that appears too good to be true. Such is the case Friday, June 19, when Eric Lindell and Anson Funderburgh will be onstage together at the intimate upstairs venue at Moe’s Original BBQ in Tahoe City. Opening will be a duo, Peter Joseph Burtt and Zeb Early, two well-known, accomplished North Shore musicians.

Burtt, undoubtedly, had something to do with enticing Lindell, the prolific New Orleans artist to Moe’s. Lindell grew up in the Bay Area where he played in bands with Burtt. He’s even recorded two of Burtt’s songs.
“He will probably bring me onstage to play them but he will change the arrangement and I have to relearn my own songs,” Burtt told Tahoe Onstage.

Peter Joseph Burtt and the King Tide, which includes Early on guitar, opened for Lindell’s band Dragon Smoke in December 2013, the last time Lindell was in town. Dragon Smoke is an all-star New Orleans group with Ivan Neville of Dumpstaphunk and Stanton Moore and Rob Mecurio, the rhythm section for Galactic.

Expect a loose jam with incredibly tight musicianship.
“Eric doesn’t play with a set list,” Burtt said. “He has good instincts. You can trust him to go to the right spots.”

Lindell plays a vintage Fender Jaguar he bought in the 1990s for $400. He creates unique low tones without using picks or pedals.
“Anson is the perfect guitarist for him,” Burtt said. “It is simple and just the right stuff.”
Funderburgh comes from a long line of great Texas bluesman.

After playing with the Fabulous Thuderbirds, he started Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets, which for decades included harmonica legend Sam Myers. After Myers died, he was replaced by John Nemeth, who has gone on to much national acclaim. (Nemeth plays Tuesday, June 30 at Squaw Valley’s Bluesdays.)

Funderburgh produced Nemeth’s breakout album “Magic Touch,” and two years ago produced Andy T. and Nick Nixon’s “Drink, Drank, Drunk.”

Peter Joseph Burtt and the King Tide have been in the studio recently as well. It has 10 original tracks which will be mixed by engineer Jason “Jocko” Randall, perhaps best known for his records with John Brown’s Body. Burtt hope to release the album in the fall.

Burtt had a song last winter that was picked up by XM’s “Margaritaville,” as well as about 15 other stations.

On Saturday, June 20, Peter Joseph Burtt and the King Tide will headline Rock the Ridgeline in Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista.

  1. We traveled to Tahoe from Boston and went to the Eric Lindell show at Moe’s. We have seen Eric perform at 7 different locations over the last 3 years with varying band mates. The show at Moe’s was truly epic for the intimacy of the venue, the hospitality of the staff (hats off to Josh at Moe’s), and the superb quality and quantity of the music – a night to remember . Will see Eric again in MA in August, but this show will be tough to beat:).
