North Mississippi Allstars, ‘World Boogie,’ are coming

The suspense is over. The North Mississippi Allstars are booked for the Crystal Bay Casino on Feb. 2, Super Bowl Sunday.

The trio, which has played in the CBC Crown Room before, announced last month it would play Jan. 30 in Los Angeles, Jan. 31-Feb. 1 in San Francisco, then have open dates until a Feb. 5 show in Salt Lake City. It seemed natural it might stop by Tahoe for a show, especially because Devil Dog Promoter Brent Harding is an Ole Miss grad with plenty of ties to the band.

“Already on it,” Harding e-mailed Tahoe Onstage in his typical concise prose. However, the e-mail came on Nov. 20, so took 20 suspenseful days to secure the band.

The announcement came the day after Devil Dog booked Railroad Earth for March 13 and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe with special guest Robert Walter Feb. 7-8. Each of the shows will be in the Crown Room.

In the spring, NMA will tour Australia. Its new album, “World Boogie is Coming,” was produced by Luther and Cody Dickinson, who plays drums, and features Lightnin Malcolm, who opens the Tahoe show, Hart and Duwayne and Garry Burnside. Chris Chew is the NMA bassist, although all of the members trade instruments during a show.

“Seeing Cody play his electric washboard while Luther often times breaks out the “Lowbow” his cigar box guitar is quite a treat,” said CBC Manager Bill Wood, who mentioned a singular Red Room after-party. “This will be the third show for the North Mississippi Allstars at the CBC however Cody Dickinson and Chris Chew have been here a few times with the Hill Country Revue. On one such night Mindi Abair joined the band in the Red Room for an otherworldly jam. Luther Dickinson has been here as a guest during Snowlive as well.”

The NMA, was formed by the Dickinson brothers, the son of Memphis artist Jim Dickinson. The boys grew up watching and listening to and playing with Hill Country bluesmen Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside and Otha Turner.

Last year Luther formed the Wandering, a five-piece folk band with Sharde Thomas, Turner’s granddaughter.

The North Mississippi Allstars played the High Sierra Music Festival last July while on tour with Robert Plant’s Band of Joy. Luther Dickinson also toured last year with the Plant with yet another one of his bands, the Mississippi Youngbloods.

NMA guitarist Luther Dickinson seems like the busiest man in rock ‘n’ roll. Last weekend he was part of Anders Osborne’s second annual Rock My Nola Soul Christmas Spectacular, which included Chris “Shaggy” Davis’ shrimp and crab boil for the fan club in the New Orleans Brewing Company. Earlier in the month, Dickinson and Osborne toured the East Coast with Phil Lesh and Friends.

In the coming months, Dickinson will be part of the 16-show Southern Soul Assembly Tour with Osborne, Marc Broussard and JJ Grey. He also will reunite with Lavin Youngblood Hart and Jimbo Mathus for shows as the South Memphis String Band.
