United Kingdom rock stars Peter Gabriel and Sting will perform at Lake Tahoe at 7 p.m. Friday, July 15, on its summertime tour, “Rock Paper Scissors.”
In a promotion video, Gabriel explained the name. “Rock, we make some music,” he said. “Paper, they made an offer we couldn’t refuse. And (Scissors ) after we do the business, we cut away.”

Tickets for the show at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys sold out in hours on Jan. 25. Tickets, however, often become available at the box office at the venue on the day of the show. The box office opens at 1 p.m.
Both artists made it “Big Time” as solo artists in the 1980s after leaving their respective bands. Gabriel, 65, was the original lead singer for the progressive rock group Genesis. Sting sang and played bass for the Police, a new wave band.
Sting, 64, said there will be four segments to the “Rock Paper Scissors” shows, which will open with the artists playing two songs together.
“We haven’t chosen the songs yet,” Sting said. “People will come and hear the hits, what we’re famous for.”
In addition to being a singer and composer, Sting is an author and actor. He released five studio albums with the Police, and the band was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
Since 1989, Sting has released 14 solo albums, earning him 10 Grammy Awards, an Emmy, three Oscar nominations and Billboard Magazine’s Century Award. He is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was named the MusiCares 2004 Person of the Year.
Sting has sold nearly 100 million albums with the Police and as a solo artist. His hit songs include “Desert Rose,” “Brand New Day,” “English Man in New York,” “Fortress Around Your Heart,” and with the Police, “Roxanne.”
Peter Gabriel co-founded Genesis. After leaving the group in 1975, he recorded 11 studio albums, a number of live albums and several film soundtracks, including Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Temptation of Christ.” He earned six Grammy Awards and 13 MTV Video Music Awards. His song “Sledgehammer” remains the most played video in the history of MTV.
He was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 as a member of Genesis and in 2014 as a solo artist.
“It’s a fairly short tour, so it was nice to get one of the open dates,” said John Packer, Harrah’s-Harveys public affairs chief. “It will be interesting to see what they do together. This is a bucket-list thing for boomers. It’s pretty exciting.”
The tour opened June 21 in Columbus, Ohio, and finishes July 24 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
