Tahoe music fans can get a taste of Brooklyn and New Orleans party music on Friday, March 18, when Pimps of Joytime post up in the Crown Room.

Encompassing soul, funk, dance and pop music, the band’s sound has been making concertgoers move and groove since 2006. Featuring original samples and dual female vocalists over a blend of modern dance and classic funk, Pimps of Joytime is well known for its ability to keep a crowd in motion.

“At our core, the Pimps of Joytime are not just dance music,” lead vocalist and guitarist Brian J said on the group’s Facebook page. “My first vocal mentor was a doo-wop singer, so I have a longtime love affair with vocal harmonies.”

Along with Brian J, Pimps of Joytime is Mayteana Morales (vocals, percussion), Kim Dawson (vocals, percussion), David Bailis (bass, sampler) and John Staten (drums). This lineup recently solidified after several years of touring the country with a rotating cast.

Pimps of Joytime released its most recent album, “Jukestone Paradise,” in April 2015.

The band regularly tours the United States, appearing in recent years at music festivals such as Outsidelands, Bonnaroo and High Sierra Music Festival.

Pimps of Joytime will be on a tour throughout the Western Us through the spring and summer, with dates in California, Oregon, Utah, and Colorado. The group will head east to the Big Easy briefly in April for a handful of shows, including an April 29 gig at House of Blues New Orleans, before returning to California for Bottlerock Napa Valley Music Festival.

Big Sam’s Funky Nation

New Orleans urban funk Big Sam’s Funky Nation makes its first Crown Room appearance since 2013 when it opens the show. The band headlined for the Stooges Brass Band the last time, and Big Sam joined Mojo Green for a song during the Red Room after-party.

The players are Big Sam Williams, Trombone and vocals, Andrew “De Phessah” Baham, trumpet and vocals, Chocolate Milk, drums, Jerry “Jblakk” Henderson, bass, and Joshua Connelly, guitar and vocals.

Big Sam achieved a lifelong goal when he was just a teenager when he joined the Dirty Dozen Brass band at the age of 19. A few years later he was the leader of his own band.

North Shore’s Sneaky Creatures will host an after-party in Crystal Bay’s Red Room after the show.
