Get on up to the Vinyl, Trey Stone’s onstage

Trey Stone
The Trey Stone Band plays Saturday at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

When Trey Stone played at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in January, he related a story about meeting the late great B.B. King. He asked if the revered bluesman still had a guitar named Lucille and King said yes, he did. Stone told the Lake Tahoe crowd that his guitar goes by the moniker of Shanaynay, “because she don’t freak for anybody but me.”

Music fans can hear some freakin’ fine funk, blues and rock on Saturday when the Trey Stone Band returns to the Vinyl showroom for a free 9 p.m. show. Concertgoers must be 21 or older to “get on up” at the casino venue, quickly becoming a rocking hot spot on weekend nights.

Tahoe Onstage photographer Kurt Johnson, a drummer in two local bands, summed up the January performance: “Amazing… I couldn’t have been more impressed.”

Stone was backed at that show by Boyce Pittman on bass, Eight Track Jones on drums and Terry Ogg on keybords.

In 2015, Trey Stone was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. He toured with the long-lived Bay Area soulsters Tower of Power for more than 40 shows in recent years. When he’s not performing with his own band, Stone often can be seen supporting a new generation of musicians. He was on hand for packed Vinyl shows by South Shore bands Lavish Green and Strange Weather in February and March.

Danny Barnes, hotshot drummer for Lavish Green and a number of other local groups, said Stone is one of the finest musicians with which he has had the pleasure to work. Stone brought his music to Lake Tahoe more than a decade ago and continues to impress.

Trey Stone’s resume dates back decades. In the 1970s, he was a behind-the-scenes pioneer in the soul/funk explosion, contributing both as a multi-instrumentalist (guitar/keyboards/vocals) and in the writing and production of dozens of hit records. Tunes included “Car Wash” by Rose Royce, “Smiling Faces” with The Undisputed Truth, “What’s Bootsy Doin’?” by Bootsy Collins and “Groove is in the Heart” by the Deee-Lite.

He was nominated for a Grammy for his work on “Kissing You” with Keith Washington, which earned him a gold record with Warner Bros. Stone made an appearance on Saturday Night Live and on David Sanborn’s Night Music. He also appeared on MTV’s Rock in Rio, sharing the stage with the likes of Prince, George Michaels and Run DMC.

Fans would be advised to run — not walk — to the Hard Rock on Saturday so they can get on out, and get on up, at the Vinyl.
