Don’t confuse Tunnel Vision for a Justin Timberlake love song, this five-piece San Diego band will bring waves of surf-inspired reggae, ska and punk-rock tunes to Crystal Bay Club’s Red Room for a free 10 p.m. show.
Tunnel Vision is Hayden Hanson on lead vocals and guitar, Jacob Hernandez on bass, Tanner Payan on drums and backup vocals, Matt Risley on keyboards, and Doug Alani, who plays a mean saxophone.
The SoCal musicians “grew up with instruments in their hands and skateboards and surfboards under their feet.” They were influenced by the punk, reggae and ska music of bands such as The Descendants, Black Flag, Misfits, Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, The Expendables, NoFX, Rancid and Reel Big Fish.
Longtime workers in the surf industry, their musical careers have been cresting for the past several years. In 2014, they embarked on a road trip from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with a group of eight bands. The antics were filmed for a DVD. Onstage, they closed out the journey with a rendition of “Up All Night.” That same year, they headed to the East Coast for a short tour.
In 2015, Tunnel Vision recorded its debut (self-titled) album in Slightly Stoopid’s famed “The Lab” studio in San Diego. Lately, the band has been playing its “Life Without Surfing Tour.”
(Apparently, they’re not getting too far off course, set to perform at the Surf Rodeo festival at Pierpoint Beach in Ventura, California, on Saturday and at a seven-stop run in Florida at the end of July.)
