When it comes to musical roots and influences, practically all music-makers today will cite a range of influences. The hyphen has become an increasingly crucial component of music journalism, with musical acts and styles requiring a dizzying array of composite genres.
Even in this multi-faceted musical world, Zach Deputy stands out as having a hell of a lot of influences.
Hailing from Savannah, Georgia, the multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter’s heritage spans oceans and civilizations, with Caribbean, African, United Kingdom and Native American ancestry all influencing his music. Deputy assesses his style as “island-infused drum n’ bass gospel ninja soul,” according to his website.
Deputy will be bringing his dynamic acoustic style to Crystal Bay Casino for a free show, Wednesday, April 27.
On Friday, Zach Deputy and the Hashtags will release the album “Keep On Movin’.”
Live-looping is a primary fixture of Deputy’s style, allowing him to lay down basic chord or rhythmic progressions that are recorded and then loop repetitively, with the musician adding other layers of sound as he goes. With this technology, the player can create vastly more intricate sonic arrays than he could as a solo musician, bringing a tech-based approach to the “one-man-band” concept.
Deputy performs and tours heavily, having played more than 1,000 shows in the last four years by his own estimation. This summer alone sees him all across the country, on the West Coast in July and on to the Northeast in early August; shows in Utah and New Mexico in early September, and a slate in Florida and Alabama a week later.
Deputy has released three albums to date, most recently 2011’s “Another Day.” He is also an avid disc golf player, serving as an ambassador of the sport for Innova Disc. Along with discs, the company manufactures a range of disc golf equipment, including the DisCatcher baskets featured in the Tahoe area at at Bijou Community Park, Zephyr Cove, Incline Village and Kirkwood disc golf courses.
