Get on up and support Trey Stone on Wednesday

Trey Stone has Stage 5 kidney failure. A benefit to help with medical bills will be held Wednesday at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

For a quarter-century, Trey Stone has encouraged folks in Lake Tahoe to “get on up.” On Wednesday night, people will do just that in a benefit show in the Vinyl showroom at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. TICKET LINK

The beloved musician has Stage 5 kidney failure and he must hook himself up to a dialysis machine for eight and one-half hours every day for the rest of his life. But that won’t keep the man offstage. Stone said he will perform during Wednesday’s show. That’s after seven bands will play in the benefit that includes more than $10,000 worth of raffle prizes.

“I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you to all of Lake Tahoe and everyone who has helped me or has been thinking about me,” Stone said Monday as he traveled to Carson City for his first dialysis treatment.

Stone is a versatile musician, part Jimi Hendrix, part James Brown. A native of Riverside, California, Stone’s first instrument was trombone, but switched to guitar at a teenager. He became a Motown session and performing artist in Detroit with bands such as Rose Royce and The Undisputed Truth. He was a member of George Clinton’s Parliament and Tower of Power. He settled at South Lake Tahoe in the early 1990s, where he has entertained nightly at McP’s, the Beacon, the Fresh Ketch and now has a residency at Jimmy’s at The Landing Resort.

Stone suffered a stroke about 10 years ago.

“That made me aware that I had really high blood pressure,” Stone said. “It finally caught up with me.”

Stone said he will soon be on a waiting list for a kidney transplant. He will be able to do the dialysis treatment at home.

Mudd Bonz, Velvet Duo, Wesley Orsolic Band, Trippin King Snakes, Niall McGuinness, Jackie and Kris Landrum, Carolyn Dolan and Big Red, John Shipley & Friend along with surprise guests will perform on Wednesday. Stone said he will play at the end of the night but might jump onstage on occasion throughout the performance.

“I am humbled to the core,” Stone said. “People have been reaching out to me from as far away as  England. Even friends from Tower have reached out. It’s just very humbling.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 6:45. The ticket donation is $20.
