One of America’s hallmark alternative rock bands is Reno bound. Death Cab for Cutie will be playing Grand Sierra Resort on Monday, Sept. 28. The band is on tour around the Western United States, with shows in Seattle and Texas already sold out.

Death Cab for Cutie is Ben Gibbard (vocals, guitar, piano), Nick Harmer (bass) and Jason McGerr (drums).

The group formed around a Gibbard solo project. Stoked by the success of a 1997 release, Gibbard worked to assemble a band, recruiting Harmer and original members Chris Walla and Nathan Good. The four began to record and tour regularly.

Album releases in 1998 and 2000 were received favorably among independent music fans, but it wasn’t until 2003’s “Transatlanticism” that Death Cab for Cutie moved into mainstream success, with two singles from the album —  “The New Year” and “The Sound of Settling” — appearing in a host of popular films and television programs that year. The band went on to sign with Atlantic Records in 2004.

A decade out from its emergence into commercial success, Death Cab for Cutie is going strong, with thronging fans attending shows all over the world. The band toured Australia over the summer, and made appearances on the Tonight Show and Conan.

In March, the group released “Kintsugi,” the group’s eighth studio album. Recorded at Eldorado Studios in Burbank, California, the album was produced by Rich Costey, the first outside producer to work with the band.

The album marks a meaningful transition for the band, as founding member Chris Walla decided to leave the group during the recording process, while continuing to assist with the record’s completion. Walla had fulfilled most of the group’s producing roles over the years.

Encompassing a wide range of musical styles including indie rock/pop, emo and alt rock, Death Cab for Cutie songs incorporate an eclectic array of instruments and synthesizers, with flutes, cellos, organs and glockenspiels making appearances in the bands discography.

  1. A glockenspiel is basically a xylophone made out of metal, a percussion instrument with bars that you hit with a small mallet.

Love DCFC, always a great live act!

  2. Ever since I discovered the TahoeOnstage site I have been stoked to read each morning about the music happening here in our area. As a longtime South Lake Tahoe local I am excited to see the scene evolving with the new Lakeview Commons and other events that Rob has been putting together. Your website is a great way to stay up on what is going on and I love the interviews with all the major bands prior to their shows. When a big act comes to our backyard I think you have to go, so reading your in-depth interviews has been nice to get me up to speed on what each act has been doing prior to the show.

Thanks again and I would love to receive the two tix to Death Cab.
    Peace

  3. Talk about a great step in the Reno/Tahoe culture with bringing Ben Gibbard and co to town. These guys have played a very influential part in my growth as a person, including associated acts comprised of current members throughout the years. I remember listening to “Soul meets body” when I was about 17 years old and remembering the way it made me feel about the confusion a teenager would feel at that age and it opened my eyes to how life can take funny turns whether it be relationship based or not and you take it with a grain of salt.

Having said that – I hope my schedule works accordingly and allows me to make it out!

  4. Love this band and have been listening to them for years! I had high hopes of seeing them since they are finally coming to Reno for my best friends birthday! I hope we can afford it.

  5. A glockenspiel is a percussion instrument similar to a xylophone and a piano. The keys are made of metal and played with a small mallet. 🙂 I would love to see Death Cab for Cutie!

  6. Love DCFC so much! So excited they’re coming to my home town! I hope I can go, it would be amazing to see them in person and hear all those beautiful songs live. Can’t imagine how great this show will be!!
