The Mavericks back on top again

The Mavericks have reunited for their fans, Robert Reynolds told the extraordinarily enthused audience in a sold-out South Shore Room Aug. 31 in Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. The Tex-Mex and country band sounds like Richie Valens meets Roy Orbison on the beach. The band broke up in 2004 but now has a new album and is touring heavily. Lead singer Raul Malo has an amazing set of pipes but was a bit testy with the sound man and guitar tech. Nevertheless, he was courteous and amiable with the audience. And he really does sound like Orbison. Guitarist Eddie Perez has rock star tendencies, keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden fancy yet deliberate dance moves and drummer Paul Deakin arms that move like pistons in shirt sleeves. The accordionist was a tasteful contributor, but I wanted to hear more from him. The horn section was very good, especially the trumpeter who battled the Tahoe’s high altitude.
