Kenny Loggins stirs memories and makes new ones

Kenny Loggins performs for a sell-out crowd on June 9 in TJ’s Corral.

PHOTOGRAPHER’S NOTEBOOK: Kenny Loggins in his time was a remarkable singer, probably one of the best male vocalists during his prime for the pop genre. He is still better than 90 percent of anyone else around. The two-time Grammy Award winner delighted the sold-out crowd that packed TJ’s Corral Friday, June 9, at the Carson Valley Inn.

The show was fantastic. The band played a variety of older and newer stuff, showing it is still current in today’s music. Their popular songs are so recognizable and the musicianship is excellent. The mix of music is spot on, with the right mix of soft vocals highlighting Loggins vocal skills and hard driving rock and roll that makes a live show so fun.

My opinion is jaded because I grew up listening to Loggins and Messina, watched Kenny establish his solo career and have seen him perform live close to a dozen times both as a group and solo. Personally, he’s in the Top 5 bands of all time for me. The crowd was very pleased and as we walked out I could only hear all great things being said about the performance, I’m sure for many it was probably their first time seeing him. To see Loggins now is nostalgic and brings back all the good memories. I’m very thankful to be able to see him perform in such an intimate setting so close to home in a small-town environment.

In 1979, he co-wrote “What A Fool Believes” with former Doobie Brothers singer Michael McDonald, along with “This Is It” (also with McDonald) the following year. Both songs earned Grammys. McDonald also will appear in this year’s summer concert series at Carson Valley Inn, on Friday, Aug. 18.

  1. Larry: I’m a middle age guy who used to absolutely loved Loggings and Messina when they were together. And prefers their music of late seventies, mid-eightes… Mother Lode is one of my very favorite albums of all time, and Be free my favorite song to hear… Is there a chance that Kenny would play any of that on his May 15th concert in Hollywood, Fla? Hopefully, someone in the forum can share some light.

    1. Hi Victor: At last June’s show at the Carson Valley Inn, Kenny played two Loggins and Messina songs, “Angry Eyes” and “Danny’s Song.” Out here in Tahoe, we are looking forward to your local artist Albert Castiglia’s appearance at Squaw Valley this summer.
