Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real

Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real Dec. 27, 2014  in Harrah’s Lake Tahoe’s South Shore Room.

Lukas Nelson has yet to become, like his father, Willie Nelson, a household name. But it’s only a matter of time. A crowd of just 200 witnessed Saturday what Harrah’s entertainment official Brian Chandler called “the sleeper show of the year.” Folks weren’t sleeping, however, they were dancing. It was the most I’ve smiled in that room since the Smothers Brothers were here.  Ostensibly a rock band, the group has the grit, soul and spirit of a blues trio. It played a mix of originals and unique covers, sometimes combined. Such was the case with Roy Orbison’s “Sweet Dreams Baby” and Nelson’s best-known song, “Four Letter Word.” While Nelson, bassist Corey McCormick and drummer Anthony Loberfo gained some new fans at Tahoe, they already have one in Neil Young, who jammed with them at the Bridge School Benefit.
