All grown up now, Boyz II Men play Grand Sierra on Sunday

Boyz II Men
Boyz II Men appear at Grand Sierra Resort’s Grand Theater at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 21.

Anyone old enough to remember the 1990s most likely will have some memories that include the music of Boyz II Men. The Philly based quartet set records for the longest runs on the top of the Billboard charts with songs such “End of the Road,” “I’ll Make Love To You” and “Motownphilly.”

When it seemed like the Boyz couldn’t figure out how to top their own accomplishments, they teamed up with Mariah Carey for the song “One Sweet Day,” which surpassed their own previous record for the most consecutive weeks at the Billboard No. 1 position.

Garnering their peak amount of airplay between 1991’s “Cooleyhighharmony” and 1994’s “II” albums, Boyz II Men remains the sound of middle school dances for me — that corresponding time of every emotion being so wrought and overdramatic. At the time, my conscious musical choices leaned more toward The Clash and The Doors. But in hindsight, Boyz II Men probably carries as much nostalgia just owing to their ubiquity on radio and TV soundtracking.

Fast forward, the four-piece lost a member due to health issues, but the trio continues to record new music and perform – most recently putting its soul vocal stylings onto a collection of old pop standards on their ‘Under The Streetlight’ record (2017) and signing onto an extended residency at Las Vegas’ Mirage casino.

Boyz II Men will bringi their R&B harmonies to Reno, appearing at the Grand Sierra Resort’s Grand Theater at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 21.

Bring a date, or just indulge your 1990s-era guilty pleasure.
