Grabbing back: Reformed Whores reply to mansplainers

Reformed Whores

Reformed Whores, Marie Cecile Anderson and Katy Frame, will perform in Truckee on March 24.

The last time the Reformed Whores were in Tahoe 0nstage, they detailed all the new things they could do if they had a “Willie for a Day.” They will stand up and do more than comedy when they return. They sing, too.

Katy Frame and Marie Cecile Anderson are the Reformed Whores, a comedic musical duo that will perform March 24 at the Alibi Ale Works – Truckee Public House. It’s a one-of-a-kind performance, yet with familiar messages.

“We’re just saying what people think and making it really funny,” Anderson said.

The Reformed Whores opened for Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang at Crystal Bay in 2013. “We have new songs, new costumes, new haircuts,” Anderson said, “and I think my butt’s a little bigger.”

“Mine definitely is,” Frame added.

Based in New York City, Reformed Whores perform about twice a week and host a monthly comedy club show. They’ve toured with Dweezil Zappa, opened for Reverend Horton Heat and “Weird Al” Yankovic and were featured at a major arts festival in Scotland.

Anderson said she met Frame at a party seven years ago. “We just started talking about boys and stuff and I said I play the ukulele and then she said she plays the accordion, and she was like, ‘We should start a band,’ and I was like, ‘I’m coming over next week.’

“We write from our own personal lives. We were really focused on love and relationships and sexual equality and finding the sense of humor about that. Now our music is kind of changing a little bit with the times, but we’re excited to be playing new songs and coming back to Tahoe.”

One of the new tunes is about Harvey Weinstein, which remains topical as more inappropriate behavior by men comes to light. Another is about “mansplaining,” the condescending tendencies males display with women. A verse goes “Just ‘cause you’ve got a penis, that don’t make you a genius.”

“The word mansplaining dumbs down the whole concept but the phenomena is very real,” Anderson said. “It’s very frustrating to try to explain to men that don’t experience it that this is a real thing that women go through. … It happens everywhere but I think it happens a lot of the workplace.”
