Lavish Green at Lakeview Commons on Thursday

Live at Lakeview’s landscape is a dramatic contrast from a year ago. After a normal winter, the lake level nearly reaches the stage. The summer concert series opened June 23.

Live at Lakeview’s fifth season opened in spectacular fashion on a perfect Lake Tahoe summer day Thursday with more than 1,ooo friends gathered to catch two outstanding bands, North Shore’s funky Drop Theory and world-renowned percussionist Paa Kow, originally from Ghana.

There’s something for everyone at the weekly beachside shows in South Shore — funk, rock, reggae, jazz, world/Afro fusion, Brazilian space vibes, Latin soul, Americana and even a dab of electronica.

“It’s going to be an exciting summer filled with great live music for the entire family,” said Leslie Schultz of On Course Events. “It’s been incredible to see the caliber and variety of entertainment we’re bringing in continuing to grow over the past five years.”

Lavish Green has been rocking South Lake Tahoe for 20 years and the band will close out the summer series on Aug. 25. Chris Sanchez, frontman and trumpeter for Lavish, said he looks forward to the show each year.

“Home. Outdoors. Summer. Kids. The whole family can come,” Sanchez said. The band also took the stage for the final concert at the beach last year. Robbie Wheeler Jr., son of the Lavish Green bass player, joined the band onstage for several songs.

An estimated 2,000 people showed up for the show, which also marked the City of South Lake Tahoe’s 50th anniversary. A drone captured a community birthday photo that day. Officials said it was the biggest turnout ever for a Live at Lakeview event. “They sold out the beer,” Sanchez noted.

“I like that date, it’s a good one. Hopefully, we’ll have some sun,” he said on a day when it snowed in Tahoe at the end of May.

Live at Lakeview is a free weekly concert series hosted at Lakeview Commons in the heart of South Lake Tahoe. Each Thursday evening from June 23 to Aug. 25, the events feature live music and art on the beach, along with offerings from local merchants and eateries, all with amphitheater-style seating and breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe from the beer garden. Proceeds from the beer garden will continue to support the South Shore BMX Association.

Parking is limited around the venue, and biking, walking or carpooling is encouraged. A complimentary bike valet service is offered each week. Additional parking is available at the Lake Tahoe Rec Center, 1601 Rufus Allen Blvd. No dogs are allowed.

Bands include: 40 Watt Hype (Latin Soul) and 4 Piece Puzzle (funk and rock) on June 30; Randy McAllister (country) and Patrick Walsh (Americana) on July 7; Ideateam (funk) and Jonny Gold Trio (jazz) on July 14; Vokab Kompany (electronic funk) and Black Star Safari (rock) on July 21; A surprise reggae performer and Moonbase (reggae and roots) on July 28; Grateful Bluegrass Boys (bluegrass) and Bison (Americana) on Aug. 4; Big Sticky Mess (funk) and Boca Do Rio (Brazilian space funk) on Aug. 11; and Diego’s Umbrella (gypsy rock) and Swamp Zen (funk) on Aug. 18; and Lavish Green (ska/reggae/rock) and Wesley Orsolic Band (jazz fusion) on Aug. 25.
