The Convulsionaires’ Amazingly Mediocre Freak Show out to change the world Saturday at Whiskey Dick’s

Just how does one go about revolutionizing the global freak show disposition? Start with a dose of humility, some macabre costumes, add an amped-up rhythm section and, oh, you’ve just figured it out: We’re talking about a punk rock band.

The Convulsionaires’ Amazingly Mediocre Freak Show seeks to adjust and enhance temperaments on Saturday night in Whiskey Dick’s Saloon in South Lake Tahoe. The cover charge an unpresuming $5.

ClownThe openers are South Shore Riot, Lethal Gospel and Psychos in Love. Doors open at 9 p.m., and because it’s a saloon, entrants must be at least 21 years old – minors must wait to join the revolution.

The headliners’ personnel is, in fact, not so pedestrian.  Aaron Alvarez is the frontman. The drummer is Xtevion from the band The Schizopolitans. The bass player and co-songwriter with Alvarez is Jellyfish from Peace Mafia and the Joey Vegas Band, and he’s also the so-called “mastermind” behind Georgie Boy and Ein Hammer, presumably projects with a more ostentatious bent. Baldo, who you know from Drinking With Clowns, is the lead guitarist and keyboard player. And the accoutrement on top is Dave Cherry, on “sassophone.”  Alvarez also is with Scurvy Bastards, Everskwelch and Lack of Integrity.

The Conculsionaires’ Amazingly Mediocre Freak Show started in 2014. The band will debut new songs, including “We All Live In Reno.”

Press materials list influences as Pere Ubu, Iggy Pop, Wire, Voltaire, T.Rex, The Residents, Robert Anton Wilson, Velvet Underground, The New York Dolls, The Sweet, The Dictators, Adam Ant, Suicide, New York Dolls, Devo, David Bowie, GOB, The Sonics, The Modern Lovers, Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer, Bauhaus, Swingin Utters, Mott The Hoople, and, of course, The Damned.

It all adds up to a really great or utterly shitty show, depending on your disposition.

Whiskey Dick’s Saloon is at 2660 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. The show is promoted by Late Nite Billy Productions and sponsored by Blue Tahoe Vodka, which presents music every Saturday night at the Sierra Tract venue.

  1. Very nice article, but just to set the record straight, it’s Aaron Alvarez who’s the accoutrement on top. I’m just the “sassophone” player. To not clear this up would constitute a “Lack of Integrity.” Cheers! 🙂
